Buy Local Board Meeting Minutes

October 12, 2011

In attendance: Elliot Teel, Stacy Mitchell, Danielle Marks, Susan Tran, Jan Beitzer, Judy Halpert, Joan Leitzer, Mary Marsh, Chris Busby, Stuart Gersen, Bill Duggan, Nancy Lawrence, Kristen Smith, John Rooks, Joe Gervais and Brianna McCabe.

Motion to accept last meetings minutes. All in favor, no changes.


  • Looking for suggestions for an employment lawyer to move forward with an employment contract.


Email Clean Up:

  • There are ~30 bad email addresses.
  • List is going to Joe for review.


Annual Meeting

  • Susan discussed options and solicited feedback for the annual meeting.
  • Suggestion was made to open up the December board meeting to members.  This was approved.


Economic Survey:

  • Email has gone out to members.
  • Have not heard back on responses yet.
  • Board is encouraged to take the survey and call key business to encourage taking the survey.
  • Stacy will circulate a spreadsheet of key businesses.


Indie Biz Awards:

  • Postcards/invites are out.
  • Email reminders out yesterday with more planned.
  • Raffle donations are coming in.  We’re in decent shape.
  • Awards are going to print and are going to Casco Bay Framing.
  • Open items:
    • Set up at 5PM
    • Membership will do door
    • Bill to bring change for door and raffle tickets
    • Testing on-line payments
    • Need board members with smart phones at the event to sell tickets, take donations
    • Awards at 8, Sue to do an intro and thank sponsors



  • Marsh Agency is generously donating a 42” flat screen to Auction off for December mixer.  Local businesses and board members can sell tickets.  Proceeds to go to PIBCA.
  • Marketing to design tickets and posters to promote the raffle



  • Holiday campaign – Keep it in the Loop concept will use a “wreath concept” pushing locally made gifts.
  • There was discussion about encouraging members to use the tag “local gifts”, “locally made”, and “Uniquely Portland” in their online directory listings.
  •  Chris also talked about encouraging members to send gift suggestions that we could then post those suggestions to Facebook.
  • Press Herald, Forecaster, Bollard (gift Guide), MPBN, WMPG have been or are developing special member advertising opportunities.
  • Greendrinks event raised over $700 for PIBCA. John suggested we look at it like a $500 donation and $200 Sustaining Member.  Approved.

Next Board Meeting is November 9, 2011 at 8:30 AM.
