Portland Buy Local is celebrating its fifth birthday in Monument Square on Wed., June 29, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Please stop by! We’ll have cake (starting at 11:30), bumper stickers, the new guides, and our beautiful new custom-made Buy Local tote bags available.
We’ll also be giving away 500 Buy Local Bucks at the event. Designed by local artist Patrick Corrigan, the Bucks are redeemable this summer at participating member businesses for $1.
The Bucks kick off a our new Keep It In The Loop campaign, which highlights how shifting more of our spending to locally owned businesses creates more local jobs.
As a group, Portland Buy Local members are one of the largest employers in the city, second only to Maine Medical Center. Member businesses and organizations collectively employ approximately 4,000 people.
Studies conducted in other cities by the research and consulting firm Civic Economics have found that for every $1 million in revenue, independent businesses created 20% to 70% more jobs than chains in the same industry.
