Portland Conservatory of Music

Founded over twenty years ago, the Portland Conservatory of Music (PCM) is a nonprofit community music school dedicated to providing access to quality music education for community members of all ages, abilities, and financial levels. PCM educates through both musical instruction and concert performances.

In addition to private lessons on over 30 different instruments, taught by over 50 talented faculty, we offer an extensive array of group classes and have two specialized divisions: Karger College Prep, an intensive Saturday program for musically talented high schoolers, led by Heidi Modr, and Jazz Studies, which teaches improvisation to both youth and adults, under the direction of Titus Abbott.

In 2017 PCM assumed leadership of the Boy Singers of Maine (BSOM), an esteemed organization with over 30 years of history. Open to ages 5 to 18, this group provides boys an opportunity to meet peers who love to sing and to engage with a varied repertoire in a collaborative environment. In 2018 we hired Maria Belva to direct our girls choral program, Girl Singers of Maine (GSOM), and it has been growing rapidly under her expert leadership. There are three choirs in the GSOM for grades 2-12. Repertoire is varied, engaging, and wide-ranging, from the Renaissance to the 21st century. Starting in spring 2019 we are offering an Ensemble Program for all ages, levels, and instruments, led by two members of the DaPonte Quartet, Myles Jordan and Lydia Forbes. As a community music school we provide numerous opportunities for youth and adults to make music together. Additional examples include a Middle Eastern Ensemble, Beginning Fiddle, and Tune Learning. Please consult our website for additional offerings.

On the performance side, we present over 50 concerts annually–classical, jazz, and everything in-between. Since our founding, our free Noonday Concerts have been an integral part of our mission to provide equal access to quality music and highlight our talented faculty. Our Early Music Festival, held annually in October, furthers our educational mission by exposing audiences to the origins of classical music. Our popular Dimensions in Jazz series is curated by Paul Lichter, who was cited by The Forecaster as “the region’s most important jazz impresario.”
