Portland Buy Local board meeting 9/12/12
Present: Kristen Smith, Joe Gervais, Jan Beitzer, Doug Johnson, Will Cary, Joan Leitzer, Melissa Rivera, Danielle Marks, Mary Marsh, Michelle Smith, Elliot Teel, Stuart Gersen, Emily Rothschild
Absent: Brianna Courneya McCabe, John Rooks, Allen Baldwin
Move to accept August minutes. All in favor, none opposed.
Mary nominated Melissa to serve as Chair of Marketing. Danielle nominated Melissa marketing Chair. All in favor, none opposed. Melissa is excited about being Chair and wants to do more with social media and more with the website. She feels the website is underutilized. She asked about a fall Buy Local poster and was told to contact Theresa (artist who designed Directory cover) about a possible fall theme.
Kristen gave info on membership committee and how it works. She sees the Chairs of Marketing and Membership working together and overlapping during Exec Comm meetings. Membership Chair’s focus will be on campaigns, member benefits, educational component for members (at Mixers and other events). Recruiting needs to be a big part.
Mary volunteered to be Chair of Membership. [Cheers!] Danielle nominated Mary. All in favor, none opposed. Will said he’d like to be on the committee; he’s very interested in individual membership growth.
Joe: membership should have a dual message – support Buy Local and join Buy Local.
Stuart: we shouldn’t dilute the singular message of buying local and why it’s important. Don’t take chances on diluting it.
Kristen: we can always add a little something, tag line-type messages at the bottom of ads or posters that encourage membership.
The makeup of Buy Local committees 2012-2013:
Membership: Mary (Chair), Will, Alan, Joan, Stuart, Doug
Marketing: Melissa (Chair), Elliot, Michelle, Danielle
Kristen: At this point, committee Chairs should get in touch with their committees to schedule meetings
Indie Biz Update:
Danielle: there have been 160 nominations. Official voting begins Monday (Sept 17th). We need board help to notify nominees via phone calls. The Awards are 3 weeks away.
Mary described the evening’s schedule. We still need an auctioneer.
Will expressed concern about the live auction. We’ve got to have folks in the crowd who are willing to step up and pay.
Stuart: live auction might not be the money maker we think it is.
Much discussion about the purpose of Indie Biz – is it an awards ceremony or a fundraiser? We need to decide in order to plan the event.
Emily: we are aiming for 8-10 live auction items (unique experiences) and 10 gift certificate items for the silent auction.
Kristen reminded everyone that the Indie Biz Committee has welcomed input and opinions from the start – please attend a meeting if you have strong feelings and/or would like to help.
Danielle reported that the next Mixer will be at Karma Fair Trade, at 570 Brighton, on 9/19/12 at 5:30. Please try to attend.
Kristen says we will decide whether to offer a “membership deal” later in the year; not yet. Membership Committee should decide at their next meeting. No prorating for businesses that join at this time of the year.
Kristen, Emily and Michelle will attend NELBF conference in Portsmouth on October 5th. Buy Local will pay for Emily to go.
Downtown Worker Appreciation Day – Sept 20th. It’s coming along smoothly. Emily asked for volunteers for stuffing bags and helping at tables the day of.
Next newsletter content was suggested – Indie Biz, DWAD, Mixer, new board welcome, and an article pulled from ILSR’s website
Directory: Emily asked for volunteers to deliver some routes.
Greater Portland Sustainability Council is looking for a Buy Local board member to stay in the loop. Next meeting is in October. Kristen asked board to think about volunteering for that.
Stuart brought up the decal issue. Membership and marketing should be thinking about how we use our decal and whether we want it to show an expiration date/year of membership.
Next Board Meeting: October 10, 2012
