The days leading up to July 4th offer a great opportunity to reflect on the value of community self-determination and to honor those locally owned businesses and organizations that keep Portland independent.

This year’s celebration also marks Portland Buy Local’s 4th birthday — and you know what that means: free cake!

Portland celebrates its independentsOn the Wednesday before July 4th, Portland Buy Local spent the morning at the Farmers Market celebrating Maine’s local farmers, independent businesses, and the release of our new Find Your Independents guide.

This year’s celebration also marked Portland Buy Local’s 4th birthday.

Hundreds of people, many wearing Portland Buy Local t-shirts, stopped by to pick up a copy of the new guide and enjoy a slice of cake.

Thank you to all of those who joined us in celebrating, and to the local entrepreneurs and farmers who keep Maine such a great, independent state!

Our new t-shirts and totes, featuring a design by Maine’s own Amy Teh (pinecone+chickadee), are on sale now.

The t-shirts, which are black, are made in the USA and screen-printed locally. The totes, also in black, are handcrafted right here in Portland!

We print our local business directory only once a year, and this year’s edition is shaping up to be a stunning piece with new cover art by Amy Teh and a full-color redesign throughout.

We will be printing and distributing 15,000 copies beginning in June and running through the holidays and into next year.

Don’t miss out: For your local business or organization be included, we need your renewal form or new membership application, and your annual dues, in hand no later than THURSDAY, APRIL 1st.

Buy Local Campaign Boosting Business-to-Business Activity

PORTLAND, ME (February 5, 2010): A new survey of Portland Buy Local’s growing membership shows that the campaign’s effectiveness has continued to increase as the effort enters its fourth year.

In addition to influencing consumers, the campaign has also prompted many of Portland’s independent business owners to seek out other local businesses for goods and services that they previously procured from non-local providers, the survey found.
